heaven in the form of a pool house.

4 day work weeks never seem as wonderful as they promise. do you guys feel the same way? shoot, this one felt like it would never end!! and let's be honest, it's not over... it's only 9 am :)

i wish i could say that i was going to be camping out here for a weekend of r&r but alas...
i have 3 weeks of neglected yard work to tend to this weekend. with this more than usual humidity, the weeds have taken over.

i hope you have more glamorous plans than i!
have great weekends.

frozen fabulousness

i stumbled upon this recipe while on epicurious, and it just sounds delicious. the perfect escape during these hot summer months. the refreshing chill everyone needs at the end of a busy week. if you have an ice cream maker i say go for it (and share you thoughts on how it is)...i think i may be off to buy one!!!

frozen lemon gingersnap pie

for crust
  • 1 1/2 cups finely crushed gingersnap cookies (6 ounces)
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

for ice cream
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 teaspoons finely grated fresh lemon zest
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 2/3 cup fresh lemon juice

  • special equipment: an instant-read thermometer; an ice cream maker
  • garnish: lemon slices

make crust:
preheat oven to 350°F.

toss together all crust ingredients with a fork until crumbs are moistened. press evenly onto bottom and up side of a 10-inch glass or ceramic pie plate (6-cup capacity). bake crust in middle of oven 7 minutes, then cool on a rack.

make ice cream
bring cream, milk, sugar, zest, and salt to a boil in a 2-quart heavy saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. whisk yolks in a bowl until blended, then add hot cream mixture in a slow stream, whisking. transfer custard back to saucepan and cook over moderately low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, until thick enough to coat back of spoon and registers 175 to 180°F on thermometer, 3 to 5 minutes (do not let boil).

immediately pour through a fine-mesh sieve into cleaned bowl, then stir in lemon juice. cool custard to room temperature, stirring occasionally, then chill, its surface covered with a round of wax paper, until cold, about 3 hours. freeze custard in ice cream maker.
spread ice cream evenly in crust and wrap pie plate in wax or parchment paper, then in plastic wrap. freeze until firm, at least 2 hours.

about 20 minutes before serving, put pie in refrigerator to soften.

enjoy!

feeling a bit painterly.

perhaps it's the creative in me that loves this look so much, perhaps it's the carefree and unstuffy. maybe it's the unabashed use of color.

whatever the reason, i am digging the painterly aspects linking everything below!

the pillows and painting behind, via bellemaison 23

business cards... and no 2 are alike! if i had the time i could see the real benefits of these beauties :)

this beautimus watercolor that i think i might be inspired by!

painted egg tray from anthro. really? deviled eggs will never be the same. found here

a painting found on the kate spade tumblr.

and the beautiful wedding inspiration from oncewed. so pretty. perfect for 2 artsy farts.

the paint pallet pillow from cb2. a whole room could come from this single little pillow.

same goes with this kitchen towel, again via anthro. found here

and now, my most favorite use of this little fad. PHOTOGRAPHY! ahh. i'm in love. as are these 2 cuties:
engagement session from grosgrain fabulous

and this fab family session. i need a family to email me right now with the go-ahead. i will take your photos!! i love it. from iamaposer

and last but not least, this by the crafty ashley ann. she took an old and ugly floral print and "painted-by-numbers' right over it. so mod. and so cheap!

like this fad as much as i do? because i, for some reason, can't get enough.

up and at 'em

i had a great weekend at the lake with family, but ended the holiday with flight troubles back to nyc. i landed this morning at 8:45 and headed straight to work. not the organization i was hoping for to start the week...but in light of all the disaster and lack of sleep our first flight last night took off at 9pm. with all of the neighborhoods starting their fireworks at sun down it was like a huge fireworks show from the air!!  we could see thousands of fireworks being shot off at the same time across the horizon. one of those experiences you never even think about having, but it was quite impressive and really made me feel the fourth of july spirit!!!!

jill's post yesterday with thom filicia's lake house made me dig for more. here is the whole thing. how simple, masculine, chic and comfortable. my kind of place.
