there is nothing more peaceful and relaxing then curling up to a good book next to a crackling fire. we are lucky enough to have a fireplace in our apartment which was definitely a top selling point when we found the place. my husband loves to build a fire so over the long weekend we took full advantage of the bitter temperatures and enjoyed the serenity of the flames as the sun set and the temps continued to drop outside.
these fireplaces aren't fortunate enough to be working, but the owners have taken full advantage of the space!! i am not sure how i feel about the look of shoving your favorite book collection into the square opening. it appears as if the books can't breathe, and it seems impossible to give organization to the stacks within.
any creative alternatives to giving purpose to a nonworking fireplace?

I've seen this book thing done before and I honestly love it! I think there is somethine whimsical about the irony of books in a fire place :) I think it is great. I helped a friend of mine fill his non-working fireplace in Chicago with rolls of news paper(you just saw the ends- it ended up being a really cool textural element! Paper in a old fireplace makes me smile... Thanks for sharing
